Key issues highlight the differences between Danny Carroll and Eric Palmer. Don’t take our word for it, read Danny’s comments and see the record for yourself.
Right to Work
In Danny’s own words:
“When I first came to Iowa I worked for Lang Farms Inc. We were paid about $2.10 per hour for the first 40 hours and 1 ½ times that amount overtime. So, I tried to work 80 hours per week so that the second 40 hours was at a higher pay. My advancement in the job was based on my own effort and I was paid according to my willingness to work hard.
Iowans should have the freedom to advance based on effort and performance and to do so without having to pay union dues or join a union if they don’t want to.â€
Eric Palmer voted multiple times to force non-union workers to pay union fees, gutting Iowa’s Right to Work laws.

Government Intrusion
In Danny’s own words:
“Like you, I envision Iowa as a place where state government does not intrude into our personal lives. I believe we need less government, not more. My opponent Eric Palmer has a different view as his record shows.
Eric Palmer voted for an amendment that would require Grandparents who regularly watch 4 or more children to register with the State of Iowa , even if the kids were their own grandchildren! Not only grandparents, but Aunts, Uncles, and other family members would be required to do the same.
I cannot think of anything more intrusive. State government should respect families. I look forward to protecting the rights of your family as your State Representative.”
Government Spending & Taxes
In Danny’s own words:
“In the late 1980’s my wife and our four children (three biological and one foster) moved to an older house as we struggled to make a living on the farm. I remember reviewing the family cash flow with my wife telling her to delay grocery shopping for a few days until we could get some cash.
If families have to limit spending (and borrowing) it is not unreasonable to expect their government to do the same. The past two years the state has increased spending at a rate greater than the increase in income. That is an insult to families and businesses that provide the income and then are forced to cut back on spending as a result.”
Eric Palmer has consistently supported increases government spending. We need state leaders like Danny Carroll who will hold down spending and protect the taxpayer.
Read State Auditor Vaudt’s Comments on the Budget
“As a farmer trying to make it through the 80s farm crisis, I learned first hand how taxes hurt Iowa during tough economic times. When politicians choose to increase spending, they in turn raise taxes and fees. This drains money from our pockets and our state economy. It’s time to change to wasteful spending and tax increases. We need to provide opportunity for our families and businesses with controlled spending and lower taxes.“
Unfortunately Eric Palmer has supported numerous tax and fee increases. Eric Palmer has voted for tax increases no less than 13 times. Here are two specific examples:
Issue: Underfunding Property Tax Credits
Explanation: HF 2700 (the Standings bill) contained the funding for the property tax credits. The Homestead tax credit and Ag Land and Family Farm tax credits were underfunded by $40 million. This will be passed along to the property taxpayers in a pro-rated fashion.

Issue: Increased the state sales and use tax from 5% to 6%.
Explanation: House File 2663 eliminates the current School Infrastructure Local Option Sales Tax and replaces it with an increase in the state sales and use tax beginning July 1, 2008. Primarily this is an increase on close to 13,000 Iowa businesses who will now pay an additional 1% when the business buys something subject to the Iowa Use Tax.

We need men like Danny Carroll to bring balance and common sense back to the Capitol!
